Two things struck me from this article, one the discussion about assessment. I believe that assessment should guide the instruction we give students, but every teacher must question the types of assessment we are giving and how it allows us to differentiate instruction. The second point in this article that I believe is important to discuss is how to cover lots of content before allowing students to use it in authentic situations. I have experienced this first hand through my work with middle grade teachers. I have supported many teachers with implementing project based learning. I am amazed at how this support our struggling students and high performing students. Another point that I reflected on after reading this article is cross content instruction or interdisplinary curriculum where teacher plan social studies or science content into literacy instruction. It works very well with supporting the learning of content and advancement of reading skills.
