Grapple with Enduring Understanding

What I gathered from this weeks reading in connection to enduring understandings teachers grapple with is that understanding is not ONE achievement. Since understanding is revealed through various ways teachers must plan on how that knowledge will transcend and become understanding which is long term.
Teachers must consider and grapple with the background knowledge every student arrives to school with in order to work from strengths.
Teachers also grapple with the fact that “all interpretations are bound by the personal, social, cultural, and historical contexts in which they arise”. Students of today are different; they arrive to school with views and experiences molded by the world of today. In order to be a successful educator we must connect to the needs of students today, but at the same time hold on to our values and beliefs that are influential in our lives.
Students need real life experiences which include application of concepts. Teachers grapple with this component because theory has been left to the side and replaced by adult lecture focused instruction.

I like how you said that understanding is "not one achievement". Too many times once teachers assume a student has understood something, it is forgotten about. The true sign of understanding is being able to use the understanding over and over again in new situations.

At times it can be a challenge to connect with the needs of our kids and holding on to our own values. I find myself sharing so may stories of "when I was kid" with my students who seem to look at me with awe. It is such a different world for them than it was for us growing up. They are so used to instant gratification! I feel that when I challenge my students to display their understanding they cave in just because they don't want to work hard.

I do find though, that I can reach the "difficult student" when I have them make that connection to their experiences. The six facets makes me critically think about my approach and what I need to do to change it.

Understanding=Life long learners true , however, I find it very interesting as I read your blog and the comments that we all have wonderful ideas as well as others in our class and I am pretty sure many of our colleagues, but why is the education system in that state that it is.

Real life- that is what we need to focus on in the classroom. We as educators have to step out of our comfort zone and deal with the issues of today and see what type of students we are dealing with and watch the news, read the newspaper, watch some cartoons, watch some MTV or BET or even listen to the radio so we can relate to our students...that is what they understand..easily. Therefore, if we are able to understand those concepts then we will be able to incorporate those into our classroom creating a learning environment.
